It’s that time of year again at Footprints for our Performance Dance Team! Our Summer Sass Team’s routines are finished, costumes have been neatly pressed, and the smell of hairspray is fresh in the air. It’s time for our Summer Sass Team to hit the performing road in Oxford County!

Each year we pick a fun theme to organize our performance dance team’s routines around. As it is Canada’s 150th Birthday this year – our theme was easy to pick. All of our routines and music selections are centered around the Canadian Identity or celebrate a Canadian artist. One of the best things I love about the Summer Sass Team is that there is such a wide range of ages that can explore this theme on so many different levels.

Our littlest dancers are dancing to the tune of I’ve Got Canada in My Pocket by Michael Mitchell. And of course, you can’t have a Canada themed dance show without featuring Stompin’ Tom Connors’ The Hockey Song. Our little tap dancers have certainly been perfecting their timing for that tune.

These dancers certainly do have Canada in their pocket!

Our intermediate dancers will be dancing from coast to coast with some of Canada’s finest pop talent. From the west coast, our dancers will be dancing up a storm to British Columbian pop singer Carly Rae Jepsen’s Curiosity. Then they travel to the East coast for Nova Scotia’s Classified and his hip-hop tribute to Oh Canada.

And finally our senior dancers! Our senior dancers’ duet to the late Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah as covered by another well known Canadian singer-songwriter, K.D. Lang. This piece explores the pain and patience of survivors of the World Wars and the role that Canada played on the global stage during this time. Our Senior Soloists also have some Canada flavor to their routines.

Our pointe piece was inspired by one of Canada’s most famous groups of visual artists – The Group of Seven. Inspired by their beautiful capturing of the Canadian landscape, our soloist dances the fresh brushes of spring time.

Lastly our arobatic soloist celebrates one of Canada’s greatest music icons – Celine Dion. Celine Dion was born in a rural French town, the youngest in a family of 14 children. Celine worked her way up the musical ladder and is now a well known Canadian superstar.
