What you need to know about going to the ballet!

Five fast facts to help you have the most fun going out to the ballet! Once you know the basics you will be enjoying your night out on the town.

Going to the ballet for the first time can be a little daunting. I never attended a performance until I was in university though I’ve been dancing all my life. My boyfriend of the time was excited to take me but I couldn’t help but feel a little intimidated by what “Going to the Ballet” meant. Is it as fussy as its portrayed in films? Or would it be like going to a concert? Do I need opera glasses? I didn’t know, but I was very excited to see my first ‘real’ dance performance!

My first experience was to see a  performance  of Romeo and Juilet by The National Ballet of Canada. A story we both knew – and oh *how romantic* for our first big date out in Toronto! However, he was a little bit more than surprised that the dancers didn’t speak during the performance. I was also blown away by the live orchestra in the pit below the dancers. And of course the dancing! Wow. I can’t imagine the countless hours these dancers put in for auditions, rehearsals and performances. It was definitely a learning experience for the both of us!

From my experience going to that first ballet and the countless trips afterwards (scroll down to see the photo from Sean and I’s trip to see The Nutcracker!) here are a few quick tips to make sure you beginners have a great time at your first Ballet Experience and that it isn’t overwhelming (and you’re not underdressed!).

1) Pick the Right Ballet For You

If you are new to the ballet world, start with a story you know. If you are taking young children along with you be sure to pick a story they will recognize characters from. There is no speaking during during the dancing so sometimes it can be difficult to follow the storyline. Take some time to learn about the story before going. If you are expecting to see big pancake tutus and all the theatrics make sure you choose a show that will give you that. If you are looking to see newer ballets look for contemporary pieces or companies. Be sure to book your tickets ahead of time!

2) Dress Appropriately
There is no specific dress code for most ballet performances. Most people will dress up out of respect for the theatre. Going to a musical, a ballet or an opera is a special event! Business attire or your trendy Sunday’s best are both good options for attending the ballet. You will be sitting for a long period of time, so be sure to be comfortable sitting in whatever you choose to wear.

3) Arrive Early & Prepared
Take some time before show day to research the venue, parking options and dinner options too! Going to the ballet should be a special event! You don’t want to be fretting about traffic or arriving late. Make sure you book your tickets early to avoid disapointment too! Some ballet companies will offer special talks before or after the performance with the dancers. Check out the company’s website for more information and plan your arrival accordingly.

4) Mind Your Manners
Going to the ballet is like going to any theatre event. You want to enjoy the live performance and so do the people around you. It is common courtesy not to bring very young children to the theatre – whether that be for a ballet or for the opera. Most children will not be able to sit still long enough or stay quiet for the length of the performance. Remember to turn off your cell phones and have your snacks before or after the show. Try to keep talking to a minimum during the show and applaud when appropriate. Opera glasses are a bonus!

5) Take the Time to Make the Moment Matter
Whether you are going to the ballet for the first or the fiftieth time, it’s such a special event. Taking your little dancer to their first performance will be a moment they remember and treasure forever. Turn your phone off. Stop the distractions and enjoy the moment being there.
